Former Australian opener Justin Langer, head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants, is “curious” about joining the Indian cricket squad. After the Twenty20 World Cup, when Rahul Dravid’s coaching career comes to an end, the position will become available. The BCCI posted a job listing for the same position on Monday night.
When asked if he would like to apply for the post, Langer responded, “Well, I am curious,” as reported by dafabet. It’s not really anything I’ve considered. I have the highest regard for those who hold such a position, notwithstanding my awareness of the challenges experienced by international coaches. Still, it would take a lot of work to be a team leader in India. Considering the kind of talent in our country, that would be fascinating,” he said.
Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, stated that Dravid planned to continue leading the Indian team. Shah said that like any other applicant, Dravid would have to apply and go through the screening process. Even still, that doesn’t seem plausible. After the ODI World Cup last year, Dravid’s contract ended, and he was already not in the mood to play. There was an extension given to him and his whole support crew with only seven or eight months left until the Rummy All App World Cup.
Shah also recommended hiring a foreign coach. The most recent foreign coach to work with cricket players from India was Duncan Fletcher. Since he left in 2014, India has been coached by three full-time head coaches: Rahul Dravid, Ravi Shastri, and famous former player Anil Kumble.
Langer is a great pick to serve as India’s head coach.
If they go back to an international coach after almost ten years, it would be interesting to see. If Ashok Malhotra, Sulakshana Naik, and Jatin Paranjape—the members of the Cricket Advisory Committee—decide to go that route, Langer could be the best option.
Langer leaves a type of legacy with his record of 105 Test wickets at an average of 45 runs per game. Furthermore, he has led the Australian team to victory for over four years, and he was a major factor in the sport’s resurgence after Sandpapergate in 2018. In 2021, he guided Australia to its maiden T20 World Cup victory.
